How big will my Chihuahua get?

Most of our Chihuahuas grow to be between 4 and 6 pounds when fully grown, though size can vary slightly depending on genetics and individual build. Some may be a bit smaller or larger, but we focus on healthy, well-proportioned puppies rather than breeding for extreme (i.e. "micro") sizes. We’re always happy to share the parents’ weights and help you get a good idea of what to expect for your puppy.

What food do you recommend?

We recommend feeding Royal Canin Chihuahua Puppy food or Royal Canin Mom & Baby Dog Starter food. These formulas are designed specifically for small breeds, ensuring your puppy gets all the essential nutrients they need packed into appropriately sized kibble. Choosing a small breed–specific food is important because tiny dogs have big nutritional needs that must be met in smaller portions.

We suggest offering wet food only sparingly, as it can contribute to dental issues over time, while dry kibble helps support better oral health. We also generally do not recommend raw, “farm-to-table,” or whole-food diets for Chihuahuas, since it can be challenging to achieve the right balance of nutrients for such small dogs in those feeding styles.

As your Chihuahua grows, select the food brand that best supports their individual health, energy level, and mood. For our adult dogs, we feed Instinct Raw Blend Small Breed Chicken formula, which has worked wonderfully for maintaining their overall wellness.

Is it true Chihuahuas have bad teeth?

Chihuahuas don’t inherently have bad teeth, but their small mouths and tiny teeth can make dental care more challenging. Because it’s harder to clean those little teeth at home, regular care and prevention are key to keeping their mouths healthy. We recommend using Minties X-Small dental chews, along with an enzyme-based water additive to help reduce plaque buildup. Brushing your Chihuahua’s teeth regularly with dog-specific toothpaste also makes a big difference. With consistent care, your Chihuahua can have healthy teeth and gums throughout their life.

5

What age should I spay / neuter my puppy?

We recommend waiting until your Chihuahua is at least 6–8 months old for males and around 12 months old for females before spaying or neutering. Allowing your puppy time to fully mature supports healthy joint development and helps prevent issues that can be more common in small breeds, such as luxating patellas. The ideal timing can vary a bit depending on each dog’s individual growth and health, so it’s always best to discuss with your veterinarian. In general, waiting is beneficial—but we recommend completing the procedure before 18 months of age.
